The Chairperson of the African Union Commission, Mahmoud Ali Youssouf, has expressed his commitment to supporting the Somali government in its fight against terrorist activities.
Youssouf stated that the AU Commission is dedicated to countering the threats that terrorists pose in the Horn of Africa and across the continent.
“Most importantly, the Chairperson assures the Somali Government of the full solidarity and the unfaltering commitment of the Union, to neutralize the pervasive threat posed by terrorism and violent extremism in Somalia, the Horn of Africa region and the entire continent,” reads the statement of Mr. Youssouf.
He called upon member states to supply troops and police forces to enhance AUSSOM's efforts to eradicate Al-Shabaab.
“The Chairperson also calls on all AU Member States, including the Troop and Police Contributing Countries and the broader international community to intensify support to the Federal Republic of Somalia and the AUSSOM to effectively degrade and eliminate Al-Shabaab and other terrorist groups in #Somalia,” he concludes.
On October 4, 2025, the militant group Al-Shabaab attacked the Godka Jilow prison in Mogadishu, resulting in multiple fatalities and injuries.
The assault led to the elimination of seven Al-Shabaab fighters; however, the group asserted that they had freed all Muslim prisoners, as reported by various media outlets.
