The IGAD Climate Prediction and Applications Centre (ICPAC), in partnership with IGAD Member States and various regional and international partners, is set to organise the 72nd Greater Horn of Africa Climate Outlook Forum (GHACOF 72) on 26–27 January 2026 in Nairobi, Kenya.
The forum, which will adopt a hybrid approach, enabling both physical and virtual attendance, will centre on the theme “Enhancing Climate Services for Resilient Communities and Sustainable Development in the Greater Horn of Africa.” Organisers state that the timing of this meeting is crucial, as nations in the region continue to face ongoing climate challenges, including floods, droughts, and increasing temperatures.
"The hybrid event will bring together climate scientists, key sector users, government institutions, development partners, media, and civil society. It will feature the regional climate outlook for the March–May 2026 season, discussions on sector implications, and the release of the GHACOF 72 statement," reads the press statement seen by this outlet.
The significance of the forum will be the presentation of the regional climate outlook for the March–May 2026 rainfall season, which is essential for planning in climate-sensitive domains like agriculture, water resources, health, disaster risk management, and energy.
In addition to the seasonal forecast, attendees will explore the possible effects of the outlook on critical sectors and agree on strategic responses to mitigate climate-related risks. The forum will conclude with the announcement of the official GHACOF 72 statement, which will offer consensus-based guidance for governments, humanitarian agencies, and development partners.
Before the main forum, ICPAC will host several preparatory events. These will include a Climate Prediction Development Workshop set for 19–23 January 2026, which will gather regional and international climate specialists to create and evaluate forecast products.
Furthermore, virtual co-production workshops with sector stakeholders will take place on January 20–21, 2026, to enhance the application of climate information in decision-making.
Early warnings
GHACOFs are part of a sustained regional framework managed by ICPAC under the Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD). These forums occur three times a year to provide consensus-driven seasonal climate forecasts for the Greater Horn of Africa, a region encompassing countries like Kenya, Uganda, Ethiopia, Somalia, South Sudan, Sudan, Rwanda, Burundi, Djibouti, and Eritrea.
Founded in 1989 and subsequently recognised as an IGAD institution, ICPAC plays a pivotal role in climate monitoring, forecasting, early warning systems, and capacity enhancement in the area. Its initiatives assist member states in addressing climate risks and adapting to climate variability and change.
Over the years, GHACOFs have established themselves as a vital platform for connecting climate science with policy and practical applications. They aim not only to disseminate forecasts but also to foster communication between scientists and users of climate information, enabling communities and governments to make informed choices that strengthen resilience and encourage sustainable development.
Individuals who wish to participate in GHACOF 72 can register via the ICPAC website by 12 January 2026.
